As the summer days wind down, September is the perfect time to prepare your garden for autumn and set the stage for a bountiful spring. Here are ten essential gardening tips to help your garden thrive this month:

Plant Autumn Flowers September is a great time to plant flowers like chrysanthemums, asters, and sedum. These hardy blooms will add a splash of colour to your garden as the days get shorter.

Harvest Late Crops Don’t forget to harvest any late summer vegetables, such as tomatoes, courgettes, and beans. It's also the last chance to gather fruit like apples and pears before they fall.

Prune Summer Blooms Give your summer-flowering shrubs like lilacs and roses a light prune to tidy them up before the colder months. This helps to maintain their shape and encourages healthy growth for next season.

Prepare for Autumn Planting. Now’s the time to start thinking about planting your autumn and winter vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and radishes. You can also plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils and tulips to ensure a colourful spring display.

Feed Your Lawn As your lawn grows more slowly, September is the ideal time to apply a good autumn lawn feed. This will help strengthen grass roots and prepare it for winter dormancy.

Clear Fallen Leaves Start clearing fallen leaves from your lawn and flower beds.

Left unchecked, they can create a damp, rotting layer that can damage your grass and plants. Consider using the leaves for composting or mulching.

Divide Perennials September is an excellent time to divide overgrown perennials like hostas, geraniums, and daylilies. Not only will this encourage fresh growth, but it will also help you expand your garden.

Cut Back Spent Annuals Deadhead and cut back spent annual flowers, such as petunias and geraniums, to encourage fresh blooms. Remove any diseased or damaged foliage to prevent pest infestations.

Plant Bare-Root Trees and Shrubs If you’re planning to plant trees or shrubs, consider doing so in September. Bare-root varieties are available now, and planting them in autumn gives them the best chance to establish strong roots before winter.

Prepare for Winter with Mulch Apply a layer of mulch around your plants and perennials to protect their roots from the cold. Mulching helps retain moisture, regulate temperature, and prevent weeds from sprouting.

September is the perfect month to balance the end of the growing season with preparations for the colder months ahead. By following these tips, you’ll set your garden up for success all year long!
